Very clean, tidy and comfortable family suite, perfect for a family. It was just a pity that my son's exercise books were left in the room, but everything else was nice

Good location.allocated the room with separate door downstairs, could hear guest when going upstairs and could hear the chair being pulled by the guest above up. Could hear the cars outside passing esp at night.Good side:Bin emptied daily , 2 separate room in one room , easy chekin n chekout, good parking, like the idea of 2 in one. Overall if you are a good sleeper and could not be bothered by outside noise then it’s for you.

Reginette thank you for taking the time to review you stay with us and we are pleased to hear so many good points. We do advise that Bergholt Road is a busy road especially during the day although one of the 2 rooms you had was at the rear so should have been fairly quiet nd thank you for your custom.

Rated 4 stars. The place is accessible and cozy. Just 6mins walk from North Train Station and 7mins walk to Asda which is great! 😊 Its just that some beddings are bit smelly maybe because it wasn’t really dried properly. But overall our stay was great and we slept very well there. Thank you!

I travel quite a bit with work and stay in a lot of hotels, I can honestly say as a ''budget'' hotel this is immaculately clean and offers excellent value for money and I would highly recommend it and will definitely be staying here again in the future.

It was OK.We had 2 rooms with 3 beds. The room at the streetside was noisy because the windows were'nt well insulated. There was loud trafficnoise. Even during the night. The description of the rooms didn't say that the badroom/toilet was in one of the rooms and not in the hallway. So if you wanted to go to the badroom/toilet you had to disturb the person who was staying in the room with the toilet/badroom. It would have been nice if that fact was in the description!Shower and beds were good and the private parkingplace was very nice.
Response
Karien thank you for your review and the positive comments you have made but we would like to address the negative ones as one of the comments is misleading to other prospective guests. You booked the 2 bedroom suite which comprises of 2 interjoining rooms with a bathroom off one of them and this is not along a hallway. This is very clearly described as such on our website as is the fact that the Bergholt Road is noisy during peak periods, even though all rooms have double glazing. We promote oursleves as offering budget accommodation and you paid £80 for 2 rooms that can sleep 3 persons with each room having a fridge, microwave, unlimited wifi and free parking on a Saturday night. We can confidently say that this is around half the price you would have paid at other local hotels but we do always advise guests to read how we describe our budget accommodation in advance to ensure it meets their needs. We woul like to thenk you though for your custom.

The site was very convenient for the railway station and buses into town. The room was excellent value for money. The room was a little cramped but very clean and comfortable. The presence of the Welcome tray, fridge contents and microwave with bowls was much appreciated. A supermarket with cafe and a pub were close by so there was no problem with food or refreshment.

I have been down in Colchester since April and choose the Sleeper Lodge as it’s very well priced compared to other accommodation. The check in is simple, Martinsends plenty of information to do so, what number key with your name that will be hanging on the wall when you access the front door, which is via a keypad that Martin sends you a code for well in advance. The rooms are small but as a contractor working away is fine. There is a bigger whole first floor family room available. I have everything I need in the room, comfortable bed , brilliant power shower, mini fridge , microwave and there is a well stocked (daily) tray of tea, coffee and Biscoffs. I’ve read a few negatives about the fridge being noisy at night, but all fridges make a noise as they have motors. If you don’t like the fridge simply turn it off at the wall. Most premier Inns and travelodge don’t even have a fridge so if fridge is a problem just turn it off. Rooms are cleaned daily by Martin and his Wife and they do a good job and it’s a nice personally touch that they are maintaining their rooms as it’s their business. As for noise in the reviews I’ve not stayed in one hotel yet where I’ve not had an issue occasionally with noisy neighbours, hardly the fault of the owners if guests choose to be inconsiderate to other guests. Finally for dog lovers, this place is dog friendly, I believe it’s hard to find one I. Colchester. I have stayed here with my wife and pet Husky and there is a lovely park 2 minutes away that is popular with dog walkers. For the longer walk we have a woodland literally 10 minutes away that is also very well recommend.

Response
Abhijit thank you for your review and we are sorry to hear its not a good one. I have checked the housekeeper's log and each time she serviced your room and asked if you needed anything you said you didnt require anything. You booked our more expensive refundable rate paing £337 for a 4 night stay including a weekend. Even at this price we are notably cheaper than other local places to stay who often dont offer our facilities. For your rate you had free parking, free wifi, a fridge & microwave in the room as well as a well stocked hospitality tray and complimentary drinks and a power shower. We advertise small rooms and one of the three words we use to describe our accommodation is compact. We realise that budget accommodation such as ours will not be to everyone's liking but thank you for staying with us.

Nothing to not like here !:-)Compact room but it has everything including very comfortable king size bed and excellent shower room - the shower was probably the best I’ve come across in my travels.Useful small fridge & microwave (plates & a knife would have been useful as well as the microwaveable bowls supplied).Iron, folding chair, hair dryer & the usual kettle & wall-mounted TV.And loads of plug-sockets (bring own phone charger plug).Very responsive heating including electric towel rail in bathroom. The wall-mounted bin was a bit too close to the loo - that’s my only issue !!Very good pre-arrival info.Self checkin with door key-pad.Few minutes walk from the mainline station (Colchester North), & 2 miles from city centre. There are a few parking spaces on site & roadside parking nearby, I got a space in the front yard.I was in the “annexe”, 91 Mile End Rd., not Bergholt Rd., but they’re only a short walk apart & equally close to local facilities.

We only arrived at about 8pm -after attending a kiddies birthday party. Two cars had parked (badly) in the back …we could barelysqueeze our car (Ford Edge) in to the parking space available! It looks like the 1st car (closest to the building)parked badly the 2nd car tried to allow themselves space to get out of/into their car, leaving very little room to manoeuvre our car into/out of the last available spacePerhaps people should park in the furthest space 1st?Accommodation itself was fine -thank you.I would suggest you ask whether yr patrons would prefer upstairs (VERY SMALL STEPS) or downstairs when they book.we had to carry our dogs bed up those little steps…not easy trying not to disturb other occupants.

This was perfect for what we wanted and needed. We stayed inbthe small double, which was ample for our needs, its was impeccably clean and comfortable.the complimentary drinks in the fridge were a welcome sight and it was very handy having an iron and board to use. Checking in was problem free and the parking was another added bonus. The views from our window were lovely too. We will be back!! Thank you

We booked the small double which was sufficient for our overnight needs. The room was superbly clean and well equipped with attention to detail. It may be a small thing but to have decent coffee and tea was a blessing! Having a microwave and a fridge just made our stay even easier. We weren’t on holiday but visiting a family member in Colchester hospital so being able to be self sufficient for the short time we stayed was a blessing. I have to say that the bed was heaven, the most comfiest we have ever slept in in a BnB or hotel!I would like to make one tiny suggestion- the bathroom could do with somewhere to have towels while you are in the shower, maybe a hook by the shower door? Regardless, we wouldn’t think twice about staying again or recommending The Railway Sleeper Lodge!

We stayed in a family room as 3 adults as a place to stop over for a works Christmas party. The room was a great size and the bathroom was huge! Great hot and powerful shower and two sinks and enough mirrors for everyone! Slightly out dated/mismatched bathroom suite but perfectly usable and clean. On a surface level the room was clean, although it needs a good clean under the beds (having looked under them to check for anything left behind) but otherwise fine. The owners were super helpful in texting all the details for check in- very clear to follow. Great value overall, would use again for sure thank you!

Andrew thank your feedback and the positive comments you have made and in particular about cleanliness. We do make it very well known on our website and in the confirmations you were sent that we have quite steep stairs so this wont suit everyone. The location a few minutes’ walk from Colchester Station, access arrangements and amenities in the room were all good. However I was in a front room looking over a very busy road and the traffic noise until late evening and from 5.30 am made it difficult to sleep.
Response
Suzanne thank you for telling us anout your stay and the positive comments you have made. We are sorry you found it noisy although we do make it well known both on our website and in confirmations we send that the Bergholt Road is a busy road located near a busy main train station. Over the years we have had many guests tell us that they find our place quieter than the many more expensive hotels in the town centre but I suppose it depends on what noise levels you are used to at home. Should you look to stay with us again though, you can always request a room at the rear of the property and we would do our best to accommodate. Thanks once again.

Sadly the people renting the apartment above us partied loudly until 4am, so we did not get much sleep. Also the front bedroom by the main road had little sound insulation from the noise of cars driving past, so bring ear plugs.

Great little place, goes beyond in regards to amenities, in comparison to similar priced hotels. Albeit, you would not find a hotel at this price in this town with the amenities provided here. Doesn’t claim to be anything it isn’t, does exactly what it says on the tin. Comfortable couple of nights sleep. You shouldn’t be disappointed.

I came across this little place whilst trying to find some affordable accommodation (hotels in the area have sky rocketed!) so we could visit a friend and the zoo, I didn’t know what to expect if I’m honest but thought we can deal with it for 1 night, I was VERY pleasantly suprised! The bed was very comfy it was clean, nice size eventhough compact it didn’t feel “too small” and was very handy having the fridge, microwave in the room as I could bring the kids milk and heat it up easily and we also had enough room to store all our snacks! I’m just gutted we didn’t book a second night! It’s definitely on our list for our future visits as a place to stay!

Needed somewhere to stay to attend a graduation ceremony at the University of Essex and this place ended up being excellent. The text messages with instructions were clear, including small details that can add to ‘stress’ such as where exactly to park. It’s not a 5 star hotel which is doesn’t claim to be but they’re clean and simple if you’re just after somewhere to stay, shower and sleep. Highly recommend. Colchester itself was also a surprise, the Main Street in the centre was immaculate with wonderful places to have a few drinks and some food.

We have just enjoyed a two day stay at this very comfortable, clean, and what we thought was aVery comfortable large family room , with a medium size fridge, kettle, mugs, tea and coffee, sugar and milk on the hospitality tray oh and a couple of biscuits, also three small drinking orange juice and three small bottles of water, also an iron ,ironing board, upright fan/heater. A very large bathroom, with large bath, separate large shower toilet, and bidet. Tv.A big bed , and single bed. Extra blankets if needed. A very very long road but quiet. We both had a very good sleep. some parking at the front, but more on the road at certain times just look at the signs. The staff we did meet were very helpful. We walked to a pubcalled the Dog and Pheasant and had a very good meal and drinks, it’s a long walk but worth it. For the money paid we thought the accommodation was presented very well and we think went above our expectations.

Small compact room which had everything you require , I would suggest if you are travelling as couple that your plans do not revolve around staying in the room and your day is spent out and about . However , it was ideal for us , we had plans for the 2 days there and in the evening , the room was just a place to sleep . The room was clean , warm , tidy, there was a pull up side table , tea/coffee facilities, a fridge and microwave. The owner was very nice , polite and contactable. Plenty of instructions , points of interests and information on walls. The base is very near to the train station , a petrol station and shop nearby and a pub that does food less than a mile away . For our plans over the 2 days this premises suited us and would definitly book again should we need to come to Essex again

This property is situated on a lovely quiet residential road with a nice walk to the local town, shops, pub and hospital. The check-in and out process is simple and convenient and the host has been excellent in communication in booking and extending my stay. I'm used to staying in one of the two larger hotel chains whilst travelling for work. This place was cheaper, very well equipped and great to be able to contact the owners (great communication) if required. Not a massive room, but 'very clean' and with additional items (microwave, fridge, iron/board) and most importantly, free parking. Would definitely stay here again, if in the area. Many thanks.

We stayed for 4 nights, unfortunately our sleep was disturbed by noisy occupants of the rooms opposite. The landlord asked them once to keep their noise down but this had no effect and the noise continued for the remainder of the night so we had very little sleep. This noise occurred for 3 of our nights. The room was good, the only problem was the plug sockets were high up the walls and the kettle lead was short so we could not use them to boil the kettle. The only socket we could use for the kettle was on the floor between the beds.
Response
Andrew thank you for your review and we are sorry to hear that you were disturbed by other guests. We did speak to them and as we did not hear any further noise, assumed everything was ok. Had you have told us otherwise we would of course addressed this with them again. We have looked into your comments about the kettle and sorry to say but dont understand what you have said here. The kettle lead attached to the base is 0.5mtrs long so could be plugged in to use on any socket including say the desk. Please do come back to us via email or text / whatsapp if we have misunderstood your comments here. Your feedback is very important to us and we thank you for your custom.

The rooms were ok with comfortable beds. Level of cleanliness can be improved e.g. a dirty back to the toilet seat. Carpet in one roof has seen much better days. We traveled a long way so left before an email was sent telling us the place we were staying was different to the original address. The house was only around the corner but please send the message the day before as it was frustrating to check messages on arrival at the wrong place
Response
Thank you for telling us about your stay and and we are pleased to read you were happy with the price. We are sorry if we have missed an area of cleaning as you describe and will address this with the cleaner. When guests book, we SMS and email a confirmation which gives the address of the building. We have checked and noticed that the phone number you provided was either wrong or not working as our SMS messages were not delivered. However, after you booked we emailed you telling you of the address so you would be aware of this prior to the day of arrival. This is the same email we sent your check in details to. We didn't have an en-suite, but we had a private bathroom next door - shower was excellent! Rooms are fully equipped including fridge, microwave, fan, hairdryer etc. Arrangements for getting into/leaving were sent by text/email & very clear. It's a little out of Town, but close to the North Station & a bus stop just outside. And to walk into Town takes about 15 mins. Price was good and I would definitely stay again

Thank you for your feedback and for the positive comments you have made regarding cleanliness. I have checked with the housekeeper and she commented on the amount of rubbish and other belongings in the room which she was unsure as to whether they were intended for the bin or not. As a provider of budget accommodation we offer affordable, clean and compact accommodation. We are unable to detect any smell you refer to and we have power showers in all rooms which guests tell us they like lot. We realise that budget accommodation does not suit everyone and from your comments does not appear to have suited you. We not accept that we are poor for value for money as you have rated us because at £69 per room which you paid you paid at least £30 per night less than other local accommodation. We check our prices daily and aim to maintain our excellent value for money and sorry it did not suit your requirements.

Just a shame that the bathroom was only in one room which could of make it a bit awkward if the other person needed the toilet through the night but other than that we could not fault it. The outside of the building is not representative of the quality of rooms inside. They were very clean and really well equipped with a microwave, mini fridge, TV, iron & ironing board, tea & coffee facilities and a lovely shower!!A bonus was the juice and water in the mini fridge - a really nice touch.Full length mirrors in there as well plus a hair dryer. Better equipped than a premier in room (although not as comfy a bed).Did exactly what we needed it to - a room for the night where we could get ready, sleep and then be clean and have a cuppa in the morning!Pretty good value for money!

Stayed here as 4 adults attending a gig at the London stadium Stratford. We couldn’t have asked for a better set up and was exactly what we needed. Communication from the owners was excellent and the location to the station was great. Would definitely recommend for a London visit and will stay here again if we do. Thank you to the railway sleeper

With a really simple check-in and check-out process, this well situated hotel is convenient for travellers passing through Colchester. The room is comfortable and has all necessary appliances - I was really glad a fan was provided (stayed over when temp was hitting 30) as well as some utensils (got a takeaway but forgot to ask for utensils). Room was very clean, and off-road parking was perfect.

This is good, basic accommodation.excellent for short stays when passing through eg cycling trips.no-one on site, but helpful contactable person. The Mile End property is a fair way out of town, but co-op and good pub nearby.good facilities to make your own cereals or microwave food. But would not be good if wanted to spend time in the rooms.

Thank you for your feed back but we are very surprised to read your comments. We advertise small rooms but well equipped throughout our website and in the email and text communications wesent you clearly state this. We also state that if you are unsure about the size of our rooms and whether they will be suitable to contact us.You did not tell us you were bringing a dog with you which we normally charge for and try and make sure that the room allocated is suitable. We did however move you after two nights to a bigger room and did not charge for your dog. We did inform you that we have family rooms which are bigger but you declined this. We are a room only operationbut provide a microwave and fridge in each room which very few other places do at the prices we charge.Unfortunately you have only rated us as average for value for money but at £52 per night for your stay including your dog makes us considerably cheaper than other local accommodation. We are sorry it was not to your liking but thank you for your custom.

Does exactly what it says on the Tin. Stayed in room 3 which was upstairs, which by the way are very steep so be careful if you've been on the sauce. The room I stayed in had everything I needed. They are very compact rooms but the bed was comfy and big enough for a single male who's 6'3". All amenities in the room that you would need. I had an en -suite in my room which was of a good size and the shower was powerful and hot whenever I needed it. I stayed for 3 nights and would stay again. Very good value for money. Parking is first come first served so be prepared to park on the road if you have transport as there are only 3 available spaces but 5 rooms.Overall my stay here was comfortable and adequate. No complaints from me. The other guests were respectful and mindful of others staying there too so was fairly quiet throughout my stay and had no issues sleeping at night.

Joanna thank you for your review and we are sorry to hear you were disturbed by noises from the room humidity / temperature stat. This is not actually something for guests to use and is there to display temperature in the room but it appears a previous guest had set an alarm on it which we have now disabled. Thank you for bringing this to our attention and for choosing to stay with us.

We were in a ground floor two bedroom suite which very clean anc well presented and thoughtfully equiped. It was great to have a microwave and fridge in the room. The beds were comfortable. The insecurity was a sourse of stress though. The suite is clearly sometimes used by an on-site housekeeper as there was a door through from one of the bedrooms to an office/staffroom that clearly we weren't supposed to have access to but which equally we had no way to secure the door from our side to stop a staff member from opening that door when they start their morning duties. It was unlockable, with a thumb turn bolt needing not even a key. Normally hotel rooms have security bolts that you can flip over which prevent a door from being opened by more than a couple of inches and its not unusual for these to be needed if the housekeeping staff try to come in while you are still asleep or undressed etc so the lack of any such measures made me feel we didn't have much privacy. If you wouldn't be comfortable staying in a bedroom with no lock within the home of a stranger then you wouldn't be comfortable in this room either. Obviously some guests would have no problem with that and airbnb options of exactly that do exist but you expect more privacy and security in a hotel. Would have given 5 stars but for this issue.
Response
Thank you for your review and the many positive comments you have made about your stay with us. We were very surprised to hear of your concern about security in your room as this is not something anyone has flagged up before but nevertheless appreciate it was obviously a concern to you. As you have stated, the 2 bedroom suite has an inaccessible door from one of the rooms to the staff quarters. Staff never use this door or access the suite from this door. All servicing of the room is done via the hallway which has the doors to access the room and if a guest does not want to be disturbed we encourage them using the do not disturb sign. Although the door you refer to is not a fire escape door, our fire inspection discouraged us from blocking it up in case access was required in an emergency. We are not aware of any type of hotel lock that would prevent staff from accessing a door as you describe. All the doors can be opened by staff regardless of whether they are locked internally or not and this is a key safety requirement. We thank you for raising this as an issue and if you had contacted we could have reassured you that your security and privacy is our top priority and regret your concerns affected the review you have given but thank you for your custom.

Reasonably priced rooms with shower and toilet. The shower and toilet is on-suite with the smaller bedroom at the front of the property, which means you need to tip toe pass whoever is sleeping. Not a problem if you are family. The cleaner seemed to come every before 9 o clock so stick the do not disturb sign on your door if you plan sleeping in. There is room for 4 cars at the back of the property and yellow lines at the front.Parking wasn't a problem during our stay. The road is noisy (welcome to Colchester). Free WiFi fi. Mini fridge and microwave. Breakfast available at Asda supermarket 8:30(Sunday 10:00). The rooms are clean and kept clean during your stay. The system via text for booking in works well and we had no problems during our stay.

The room that was available to me was comprised of two adjoining rooms with three narrow single beds. The beds were screwed to the floor, I assume this was to prevent them being pushed together. The room had a microwave, a small fridge and a TV with freeview. Tea and coffee making facilities and bottles of water were included. There was a hot powerful shower, the cubical had orange mold covering the grouting, which while not dangerous should be addressed. There are no staff on site but clear instructions were given for checking in. There were several parking spaces to the rear of the property.
Response
Thank you for your feedback following your stay with us and the many positive aspects you have commented on. Just to address a couple of specific points you have made - the single beds are fixed to the floor for a few reasons not to stop guests pushing together but principally to maintain recommended fire safety layout and also damage to decor that can occur when guests attempt to move beds which we find is more likely with single beds. Also we do have a housekeeper on site at all times although as we make guests aware in the confirmation we send them, that as we operate self check in and don’t have a staffed reception, it is unlikely you will see staff during your stay but we are always available by phone. We have looked at the shower cubicle and note some water staining on the grout which should not have happened as it’s supposed to withstand this but will get this addressed. Thank you once again and for staying with us.

The room itself lovely, and very well self contained especially for the price. However, bed sheets had stained mold spores under the pillows and the next room had 3 very loud lads staying in there so not the most peaceful nights sleep. I couldn't ring anyone as it says not to ring the number after a certain time?

Thank you for your review which we have also replied to your email. Unfortunately what you have stated here is incorrect. There are clear signs on each room door with an out of hours number to call and had you have called us we could investigated the noisy guests you referred to. All our laundry is supplied and laundered by a specialist frim who supply many hotels. In their processes all laundry is industrially cleaned and it is extremely rare we have a problem but had you have brought that to our attention we could have looked at this for you. We are sorry to hear that your experience but on the two issues you have raised had you have contacted us we could have helped.

Our daughter has started at Essex Uni. The Railway Sleeper lodge suited us to support her while she got started. We could take our dog and get a feel for Colchester. The accommodation was as described, clean and functional. There's good dog walking loop nearby (approx 45 mins) and a pub, The Bricklayers' which does decent burger type food. 25 minutes walk into the town centre and castle. 10 minute drive to Essex Uni. A big ASDA 3 minute drive. Only downer is the roundabouts in Colchester, which can cause issues at peak times.

Had a good time staying just a few problems that has happened while being there. The toilet blocked and was unable to use it after the second day and when asking for new towels as we was staying for 2 days 2 nights our towels had been soaked from the first night and morning we needed new ones but was unable to supply them so we had to go buy our own towels, also as we was staying downstairs there was people staying in the room above and every time they walked in the room you could here everything and when they stepped in a certain place it would make a loud banging noise which woke us up.

This place is perfect for a base in Colchester, we stayed in room 5 on Mile End Road. The room was well equipped and comfortable, we were pleasantly surprised that it was cleaned and replenished each day. The private bathroom was massive with a huge bath and shower. The only reason I have given 4 stars and not 5 is because the mattress on the double bed could do with replacing. The first night we slept very well, after a second fairly peaceful night I woke with back ache, and the third night I kept waking up because I could feel the springs poking into me. I have a back care mattress at home so maybe that's what I am used to?!
Response
Alana thank you for your very detailed feed back and we are very pleased to hear so many positive comments. The double bed mattress you refer to is less than a year old and from experience, we find a medium firm mattress tends to suit most people. We will however check it out in the light of the comments you have made although its possible as you have acknowledged that you are used to a very specialist type of mattress at home therefore making it difficult to adjust to a different one. Thank you once again.

The rooms at the railway sleeper may be slightly smaller than a hotel room but it is clean and pleasant. You have to remember this is a room only but it is comfortable and there is everything in the room you would need, freeview tv, iron, ironing board, microwave, fridge 2 fold away chairs and a fold down table, ideal is you are just popping through Colchester or staying for a night or two. They allow dogs and the staff and owner are very friendly.I have stayed about 5 times now as i use the lodge when i am going to see my son and cannot stay at his flat. Highly recommended.

The room was clean and tidy. The landlord was very helpful and kind. However, on the down side the room was too small. I wasn’t very happy about the size as I had to self isolate there for 10 days, but I think It would more than enough if u are just there to spend the night.
Response
Laween thank you for your feedback. We do understand that when you are having to self isolate it is difficult when you are restricted to one room but we do have larger more expensiveroomsbut I am assuming whoever booked this for you was on a specific budget and thank fully the requirement to self isolate is a short lived matter.

Booked this place 3 times now - wouldn’t go anywhere else to be honest. The rooms are adequately packed for the essential use. Large double room with en-suite, mini fridge, microwave, iron & board, tv & wifi. Located just a 5 minute drive from supermarket (Asda & Iceland), brilliantly situated for the train station & a 10 minute drive to the main town. Room is clean & tidy. Able to bring our little Shih Tzu dog, who also loved it in the room too. There is a recreation park about 15 minute walk up the road for you to take your furbabies too. In general, I would highly recommend The Railway Sleeper for an over night stay, long weekend or even a long stay like myself.

Does exactly what it claims, fits the bill if you are looking for simple, clean, comfortable bed etc. Especially convenient in the current Corvid climate as there is no contact with receptionist or other visitors unless you require help, as the entrance is via a keypad. Also the microwave and fridge mean that if you want a take - away, or deliveries, you can heat food up. The property has steep stairs so perhaps not suitable for everybody.

This was not the property or room that we viewed online...we were given Bergholt Road lodge which as I said isn't the same photos we saw online.Room was very small for 2 adults with nowhere to sit except the bed. All needs were met as it contained everything that is needed. Kettle, microwave, small fridge, complimentary water and fruit juice, tea coffee sugar milk etc which was replenished at our request, small iron and board and hairdryer. Room was too hot which is set by the owner and cant be changed manuallyyou can just turn the radiator down had to keep window open. Also none of our towels were changed whilst we were there. Bed very comfortable. A pleasant stay with a good location for us.
Response
thank you for your feedback and we are sorry to learn we fell short of your expectations. You booked via booking.com and we have no control over how they display our property but I have just checked and we have a total of 45 photos on there which are all up to date and show the complete range of rooms we have. The room you stayed in is our smallest and cheapest and we do describe it on our site as ideally only being suited to one person even though there is a double bed in it. I was somewhat surprised about your comments about the heating because as per the signage in the room, the overall temperature is controlled automatically, in each room you can turn the heating up and down or off. In relation to towels, our FAQs do state that we change these on every third day but did ask whether you needed anything and should you have wanted them changed, had you have asked us we would have done this. WE are pleased at the many positive aspects of your feedback and it appears that some of the other areas could have been improved upon with better communication and we shall look to address this but thank you for your custom

For me and for my family this wasnt a holiday. I was moving homes and needed a place to stay. The price was very friendly and the staff that i reached trough the phone number was also friendly. So this place if fully automated, makes it easy and quick to check in and check out. What i could suggest is, to check the extra blankets provided, some where a bit dirty sadly, the heating could be a bit higher around 5 or 7pm it was noticably cold. But thats about it really, nice clean and well equiped. The quad room were awesome!

We originally booked as we had intentions to go out and return in the early hours and the 24 hours access was appealing for this. The ease of access and the communication from the provider was good. Offsite parking was a bonus. We were welcomed to warm cosy room with dimmable lighting to set the mood for a couple. The shower facilities were good and the bed was clean and comfortable. Checkout is 11am but we booked an extra day with the intention to stay in. Overall a good stay and would return again in the future

Actually, my stay in Railway Sleeper Slodge was amazing, I enjoyed it. However, the lighting in the room was not functional, I had to use my phone light in the room. The light in the room needs to be repaired.
Response
Abdullah thank you for custom and we are pleased overall your stay was enjoyable. We are not sure what you meant by the lights in the room as we have tested them and they are working normally. We have dimmable lights which you operate by pushingthe round switch button down and rotating depending on how bright you want the lighting. If you were experiencing problems suing this then had you have called us we could have helped. Do feel free to come back to us though if we have not understood what the problem was you experienced.

Wasn't happy to discover that I'd been given the wrong location, when booking on the site. Was even less happy, when discovering that there was no reception, or on site staff. The place was incredibly noisy. Kids above me yelling & jumping around untill after midnight. Then loud drunken couples carrying on & arguing outside my room. Froze the first night, before discovering in the morning that there were small shutter windows, open above the main windows, that were consealed by the blinds. Also, the price went up during booking (failed to include taxes in bait price). Had I known that there were no management, or staff, on site, I would not of booked it. All round unpleasant experience! ??
Response
we are very sorry to read your review of your stay with us and are disappointed you did not contact us to tell us your concerns. you booked via booking.com and it is very clearly stated we do not have a staff reception and we operate self check in. This was also stated in the confirmation we emailed you. I as a manger was on site throughout your stay and this is on the notice in the porch area. I am unsure what you mean about the price went up during your stay as you booked via booking, com and would need to take that up with them. My son and I stayed for 2 nights, so ideally we needed 2 rooms but this was prohibitively expensive in the majority of Colchester hotels. The property was easy to find, and easy to access. Comfortable rooms, the fridge and microwave were a huge benefit as we could eat for way less and much more healthily than we normally would using fast food outlets. There is a huge Asda just at the bottom of the road.Only negative was that parking was not very easy to access as we were using a van, but on street parking was fine

Can’t believe such a small room could fit so many amenities in. Yes it’s small, but it’s all the size you need and is perfectly comfortable. Only downside I would say is perhaps the decoration is a bit dated and some maintenance needs to be done but it really didn’t bother me all that much and I will definitely book again

Accommodation was a house in a residential areaWe had the front room bedroom 8. Very small not really comfortable with a dog and basket. Made worse by guests arriving at 12.15am and parking in front of the window with lights blaring through. Then up and down noisy stairs and sorting out in the bedroom above. Because the room was small it was extremely hot.Positive things: complimentary water and orange. Reasonable bathroom although the shower could have been cleaner.
Response
Thank you for your feedback and we are very sorry to learn you did not have a comfortable stay. We should point at that when you stayed it was exceptionally hot with overnight temperatures over 20 degrees. Also when travelling with a dog, a bigger place with air conditioning would be ideal. We do advertise small but compact rooms and this is reflected in the prices we charge as we are considerably cheaper than other hotels for what we offer. We can assure you the bath mat was not from a previous guest at these are changed each time but may have been taken out of the dryer too soon. We shall address your comments about the shower with the housekeeper which we were most surprised to learn. We do recognise that our type of budget accommodation wont suit everyrone but thank you for your custom on this occasion.

Pleasant budget rooms, easy booking in service, good guest trays with goods to use for microwave. Only issues was shower head, edges of bathroom floor and inside of radiator could do with a good deep clean. The standard of sheet on the bed in one of or rooms was not good. As said budget hotel with easy parking.
Response
thank you for your detailed feedback and we shall investigate your comments about the shower head. As its a hard water area where we are located we do de scale showers heads regularly so it may need to be replaced. We dont normally like to distinguish between normal cleaning and deep cleaning as we already have a very detailed cleaning checklist which is followed each time and some of the points you have raised which are very valid are more down to wear & tear but we are due to re decorate very soon so that will address these. Thanks once again.

Stayed for one night in a double. Whilst first impression was not great from outside, once inside the front door this all changed. Very clean and decor was really well presented. Bathroom was a very good size with a large shower cubicle and powerful shower. Was impressed and will definitely stay again.

I have thought long and hard about leaving this review but I feel frustration and concern about my stay at this hotel so I have had to leave a review that reflects my feelings. Both evenings I was disturbed by kids playing loud music, talking loudly and banging on the floor. On Friday evening it stopped around midnight. On Saturday evening the noise went on through the night. I phoned the hotel and someone told me it would be dealt with. Then a person came out of the room opposite mine and proceeded to tell them that it was the “person below†them that had complained, and then he repeated it! Bear in mind that I am a woman, staying alone with her dog that is scared of people! I was angered that this person thought this was OK, surely “people have complained†would suffice? The music stopped, but the talking, laughing, banging continued until about 5am. My Sunday was an 8 hour seminar followed by a 4-5 hour drive home so it was a bad day to start off with no sleep.I have raised my complaint with the hotel and they have apologised and have refunded me 50% of the cost of my stay.I greatly appreciate this goodwill gesture but the response to my concerns has left me dissatisfied as I feel that I have been dismissed (‘we will have to agree to differ’) and I am worried that this situation could occur again during any future stay of a woman on her own, an elderly person etc.Their view was that the noise makers were ‘just youngsters’ and ‘not a threat in any way’. In future I want to urge them to consider the fact that the perception of their guests may be different to theirs and that their business depends on whether guests feel comfortable. If the hotel insists on giving the information of who has complained, I think it is only fair, and it is essential, that they inform the person complaining that they are going to do it and gain their consent.Unfortunately, I would not stay here again despite the lack of dog friendly accommodation in the area.

Carol thank you for your feedback and we are sorry that you did not have a pleasant stay. We are somewhat surprised at your comments as you have already made them to us via text message and sent them through to our website also. We had hoped that giving 50% back asa refund was to your satisfaction as you accepted it and did not ask for anything additional. It is quite rare that we have noisy guests and unfortunately in such circumstances we lose out as we are not able to charge the guests in questions for the amount we have refunded you. As a dog owner myself, I fully understand that it can be extra distressing for them, particularly when they are in a strange environment. We don’t accept you statement that you were named and shamed however. When you alerted us first to the problem on the Saturday night of your stay at 23:45, we spoke to the guests and told them to switch their music off or to a level that it could not be heard outside the room. We explained we had had complaints from others guests and in particular those directly beneath them as all they are going to be most affected. We spoke to them again at 12:15 and we believed the noise had stopped, did not think there was still a problem. These guests were youngsters who were apologetic and were not threatening in any way but as can happen, when alcohol has been consumed, were oblivious of their noise levels. Thankfully this does not often happen but we are unsure what else you would have liked us to do. Bearing in mind the time on a Sunday morning, our only option would be to call the police. I cannot guarantee they would attend and if they did there may well be a long wait. They would also want to question all of the guests meaning that everyone is then affected. On a separate issue, parking and places to walk your dog. In the confirmation we emailed you, we advise that we have limited parking but you can park on the road overnight without restriction. We also point out places to close by to walk your dog.We regret that our place was not suitable for you but do feel we have done everything we could under the circumstances.

Exactly what was needed - a place to sleep with a few extras.Hair dryer, iron and ironing board, microwave, little fridge etc.We travelled from different corners of country for a funeral and it was just so convenient and brilliantly placed for walking to the station to meet one of our party.Massive choice of eateries within a mile and a half.Slept like a log.Wouldn't hesitate to recommend

I came in late at night, but was remotely guided in perfectly, no problems. Location only 15min walk from the station was also a good feature. I found a nice room wih lovely shower, comfy bed and some refreshments I enjoyed a lot. I had to get up early, so spent only a few hours, but the room was all good. Highly recommended. For and extended stay, or with company, I might have liked a larger room, probably.

Very comfortable place. I like how the room came with a good amount of facilities. The private bathroom was 5 star and luxurious. The staff were quite attentive and allowed us for an early check in. Only downside is the walls are thin and you can noise from other guests. Overall great value for money and I would definitely come back.

Basic accommodation but everything you really need if you’re happy to avoid luxuries. Very comfortable beds and amazing shower! I felt safe with the code on the front door and the area is well lit with parking round the back. Mugs for tea and coffee and plastic cutlery and plates left out to use. My only criticism was that the mugs in my room weren’t very clean. Otherwise the room, and house was spotless. Very happy with my stay and would be happy to stay again for the price I paid.

I originally booked the interconnected rooms with 3 single beds but the owner had to move us due to an issue. We we’re accommodated in a double room and a family room. Both rooms were clean and warm and although the family room didn’t have an en-suite, it did have a huge private bathroom. The orange juice and bottled water were nice touches. Only disappointment was we realised at 10.30 pm we didn’t have any tea bags in the family room & had to take one of the 2 teabags from my Mother’s double room. Meant we could only have orange juice in the morning but not enough of an issue to affect my rating. Good value & rooms were bigger than expected.

Easy booking, easy collection of key, no issues, clean tidy lovely and warm. Had to run the hot tap along time but once the water was hot there was plenty and found the shelf in the bathroom a difficult height, made it difficult to brush my teeth.

Again we enjoyed our stay at the Lodge, it has all we require, usually it is myself my two daughters and the two ðŸ•, but this time my daughter who lives in Australia joined us.There was still enough room, and the facilities were ample. We don't look for anywhere else to stay when we visit Colchester

The room was comfortable but the pink voile makes the room look like a knocking shop from the road and not very inviting.
Response
Lisa thank you for your feedback and we are sorry to hear of the rather disparging connotations you feel our pink voiles convey. Pinks are part of the reds family and are very popular in the hotel trade and we have had many positive comments about the warmth and homeliness they offer compared to typical white. We realise colour likes and dislikes are totally subjective and accept this one aspect was not to your liking but thank you for your custom and feedback

This was the second time Ive booked my family members to stay at The Railway Sleeper. I live locally but due to limited space need to accomodate family somewhere else to sleep. This guest house offers everything you need. Booking process is easy and the process of collecting keys has never caused any issues to the guests. Would defenitelly recomend and use again.

Easy to find, clear instructions via text to confirm key code entry. The room was small and compact but there was everything you need in the room. Comfortable bed, which offered a good nights sleep. I will be staying here again when I next come to Colchester.

Pleasing stay at the Railway Sleeper. Room was comfortable with all the amenities I could want and more.Only one thing that let it down was that the remote did not work with the tv. Had to find buttons on tv and change manually!
